Adam Avery
President/Brewmaster
My love of beer began as an infant. My aunt would put a few drops of the precious liquid on my pacifier to ease the pain of teething. My passion grew through the years as my parents had a ‘European attitude’ towards alcoholic beverages. As I grew into adulthood, I found it difficult to find brands that challenged me. My taste buds required more flavor than breweries at that time were creating. I was forced to homebrew. All kinds of strange concoctions poured from my kitchen. The cases stacked up…..my friends and I couldn’t quaff as fast as I brewed. The creations, I was told, were great. ‘Start a brewery!’ they said. So with the aid of Dad and his friend, Steve Wagner, I turned my hobby into a profession. Now my singular goal is to challenge your taste buds while taking brewing to another level of flavor, quality, and consistency. I am……a beer junkie!

Larry Avery
First Retiree
Dad grew up during the oppressive days of ‘American Lager’. His tastes have certainly shifted, as it is nearly impossible to get him to drink beer with less than 8% alcohol. He’s turned into a hophead too! A research chemist for nearly 30 years, he chucked it all away and threw everything he had into the brewery. After retiring in August of 2009 after over 16 years with the company, he now serves proudly as our first retiree, occasionally stopping by to sip a brew and to remind all of us working folk just how nice retirement actually is. With more time on his hands, he can devote even more effort to running, his favorite sport over the last 28 years, having logged more than 62,000 miles during that time span.

What is your favorite Avery beer and why? New World Porter! It’s the best of both worlds… but my words could never do this beer justice, so just drink one. Or many.
When you’re not drinking Avery, what are you drinking? I typically lean towards anything sour or hoppy, but it really depends on my mood, time of the year, or what meal I’m pairing it with: breakfast, lunch, dinner, desert, midnight snack… Lets just say beer.

Your happy place is bed.
Who do you want to have a beer with right now? My family, especially once everyone is old enough to drink. Hopefully the legal drinking age will eventually be lowered, cause otherwise it’ll be another 2 decades before that’s a reality. But I guess I would also go with Dave Chappelle, or Matt Bellamy cause they seem like really cool dudes. Oh, wait, actually can I say a naked Jessica Alba? Like back when she was in Dark Angel. Ok, my mind is going wild right now, so it’s more like who wouldn’t I want to have a beer with? Naked or clothed. Not a lot of people on that list… but actually most of them should probably have clothes on.
How do you spend your time away from Avery Brewing? I’m still learning about this whole “time away” thing, but when I do get out I enjoy drinking beer, sleeping in, games/puzzles, snowboarding, shows/movies, trying something new, sports, travelling, … but most of my time is usually taken up by my OCD and anal retentive tendencies.

Aaron ButzenWhat is your favorite Avery beer and why? The fourth beer in our Barrel-Aged Series, Dépuceleuse, will always hold a special place in my heart — I’ve been chasing the high of barrel-aged and wild ales ever since — ours and other breweries’ and some of my own homebrews. Most of the time, though, I’m crushing our session IPA, 4Point2. That’s crisp.
When you’re not drinking Avery, what are you drinking? Usually massive amounts of coffee and water, trying to recover from drinking too much Avery. In elementary school, what did you want to be when you grew up? A jazz sax player. Alto.

Getting paid in beer since October 2014

Derek Head Avery BrewCrewWhat is your favorite Avery beer and why? Thus far, 2008 Beast Grand Cru. For me, the alcohol burn is balanced perfectly with the strong malt backbone. Or maybe it was the 17%, I can’t remember. I just remember being happy at the end of the glass.
When you’re not drinking Avery, what are you drinking? Coffee in the morn, water during the day, and Laphroaig at night. Bring on the peat smoke in truck loads!
In elementary school, what did you want to be when you grew up? duh-na-na-na-na-na BATMAN
First concert? I think it was a Blink-182 show. I was 10 and I learned a lot of profanity in one night.
Coolest place you’ve ever had a beer? On top of the 720BBL fermenters at the new brewery with my bosses, watching the new brewhouse get craned in while the sun set behind the mountains. The perfect introduction to Boulder during my first week. I love this job.
Your happy place is… hanging in my hammock over a body of water. Try it after eating a pound of bacon and it’ll be the best nap you’ll ever experience.
Who do you want to have a beer with right now? Alexander Supertramp
How do you spend your time away from Avery Brewing? Either trail running away from Truck, floating in some water, or diving in the sand playing volleyball. Pretty much anything outside will keep me happy.
